Oregon State Upsets Georgia

Great game for the Beavers. I liked to see them jump out to the lead and protect it down the stretch. Here’s the game recap from CBS Sports:

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Chris Stephens had 25 points and hit 8-of-8 free throws down the stretch to lead Oregon State to a 64-60 victory over Georgia on Saturday.

Nick DeWitz had nine of his 14 points in the first half for the Beavers (4-3).

Levi Stukes scored 11 points to lead the Bulldogs (7-2), whose seven-game winning streak was snapped.

The game was marked by poor outside shooting by Georgia and turnovers by Oregon State. The Beavers committed 17 turnovers, and Stukes was the lone Bulldog in double figures.

Oregon State led 36-31 after a sloppy first-half where the teams combined for 18 turnovers.

The Beavers took a 51-41 lead after 3-pointers by DeWitz and Stephens, but the Bulldogs went on a 15-3 run capped by Steve Newman’s 3-pointer to pull into a 56-all tie.

Stephens made two free throws to make it 60-58 with 4:06 left, but Sundiata Gaines tied it up again on a driving layup. But Stephens made two more free throws, and Channing Toney missed a chance to put the Bulldogs on top when his free throw rimmed out. The Beavers got the rebound and Georgia had to foul Stephens again, who knocked down two more free throws.

Toney had nine points and Newman and Younes Idrissi each had eight for Georgia, which shot 37 percent.

Members of the 1980-81 Oregon State team were honored at halftime. Dubbed the “Orange Express,” that team won 26 straight games and was ranked No. 1 in the country.

The Bulldogs, with five freshmen and five sophomores on scholarship, will match last season’s total wins with another victory.

Last year, Georgia beat the Beavers 76-74 in overtime at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl for Kids in Atlanta’s Philips Arena.

The rematch on Saturday was played at the Rose Garden in Portland.
